Faulty battery delays sale of seized Maserati

Published: Thursday, February 2, 2012 at 6:50 p.m. Last Modified: Thursday, February 2, 2012 at 6:50 p.m.

A high-priced car, auctioned on eBay by the Terrebonne Sheriff’s Office last month, hasn’t been turned over to its new owner because it’s in the shop for repairs, officials said.

The 2005 Maserati Quattroporte was purchased by a Kenner man for $33,250, who won it in an eBay auction, authorities said.

The car, seized from a convicted drug dealer, was sold via the online auction site in January after the state Attorney General’s Office gave Sheriff Vernon Bourgeois the OK to do so.

The sale was completed on Jan. 19, and the new owner paid the Sheriff’s Office with a cashier’s check, authorities said. The car was advertised as being in “mint condition,” but problems were found after the auction ended, said Capt. David LeBoeuf, who is in charge of purchasing at the Sheriff’s Office.

“We don’t want to sell the guy a bad car,” LeBoeuf said. “We thought it was in mint condition.”

The Maserati is currently at a dealership in Houston awaiting a new battery and repairs for problems associated with a dead battery, authorities said. Several of its parts are also under recall, LeBoeuf said, and must be replaced.

Authorities haven’t gotten a repair estimate yet, and no money has been spent to fix it, he said. There won’t be a charge to replace the recalled parts.

“Before they do anything, they’re going to call us,” LeBoeuf said.

The buyer hasn’t requested the return of the cashier’s check, and he still intends to buy the car, LeBoeuf said.

The Sheriff’s Office has not cashed the check.

LeBoeuf said he is not sure when the car will be fixed or the sale will be complete.

Don Pierce, general manager of the Maserati dealership in Houston, did not immediately return a phone call.

Proceeds from the car’s sale will be split among the Sheriff’s Office, the District Attorney’s Office and the local court system. The Sheriff’s Office gets 60 percent, the District Attorney’s Office 20 percent and the courts 20 percent.

The Maserati once belonged to Steven Hebert Jr., 37, of Schriever, who was arrested in February 2009 after a search of his trailer turned up more than 500 grams of cocaine, guns and $175,000 in cash. Authorities seized the cash, which Hebert admitted came from selling drugs, as well as the Maserati, a four-wheeler, a Suzuki motorcycle, a 1971 Buick, a 2002 Suzuki, a 2003 Cadillac Escalade, a 2004 Kia and a motor home.

Hebert, convicted in September, is currently serving more than 24 years in federal prison.

When it was seized, Bourgeois estimated the Maserati’s worth at $80,000. In early 2010, he said the value had fallen to $48,000. In mid-2011, during an unsuccessful auction, the Sheriff’s Office was requesting bids of at least $30,000.

Despite criticism for holding on to the car for so long, Bourgeois has said he did so in hopes that the national economy would stabilize and it would fetch more money.

Car dealers have said that a vehicle’s value depreciates over time unless it’s collectable. The 2005 Quattroporte is not a rare model.

SAN JOSE, Calif. (PRWEB) December 11, 2007

In addition to becoming a greater force in music, the team also has several major TV shows in development including a new reality program that will revitalize the hip hop genre. That show is set to begin filming as soon as January 2008. The duo is also expected to join forces with a major Hollywood film actor to produce several films.

“Having Wyclef as a partner is a tremendous honor. He is one of the most talented and respected voices in modern music today. His work with the Fugees and all of his solo projects shows great depth and dedication to his craft. His brand of creativity is a great complement to our executive team,” said Misle. He added, “I have great respect for the humanitarian work he does in Haiti. It says a great deal about his character. Character is an important factor when I decide to do business with someone.”

Jean stated, “In a time when record companies are suffering due to download technology, the idea of artist development doesn't exist anymore. It was great to find my partner Howard 'Big H' Misle, owner of In Ya Face Records, who belives as well as I do that true artistry lies not in technology but in the development of the artist.”

Howard Misle is an important figure in the U.S. and International metals, waste management and industrial recycling businesses. Misle stood by Wyclef while he produced his latest CD “The Carnival II: Memoirs Of An Immigrant” and when the CD was completed Misle executive produced the music video clip for its debut single, “Sweetest Girl.” Carnival II is expected to debut in the Top 10 amongst the Billboard Top 200 Albums this week.
