Gotye tops singles and albums charts

Melbourne singer-songwriter Gotye has ended Adele’s record-breaking run atop the ARIA charts with two impressive number one berths.

Making Mirrors, the latest record from Gotye – moniker of Wouter De Backer – debuted at number one on the Australian albums chart, reaching gold sales status in the process.

It is the first album this year to sell more than 35,000 copies in one week.

Meanwhile, his single Somebody That I Used to Know, featuring Kimbra, records its third consecutive week at number one after enjoying a 20 per cent spike in sales.

Gotye becomes the first Australian act since Silverchair in April 2007 to held the number one single and album spots simultaneously.

But success hasn’t eluded fellow Aussies Jack Vidgen and Josh Pyke who both entered the charts high on debut.

Fourteen-year-old Vidgen, the most recent winner of Australia’s Got Talent, entered the albums chart at number three with Yes I Am, while Pyke records his third top-five album with Only Sparrows.

UK songstress Adele rounds out the top five with 19, and 21 dropping to second spot.

There are 11 Australian albums in this week’s top 25, including Nero’s newest record Welcome Reality at number 12 and Frenzal Rhomb’s Smoko At The Pet Food Factory coming it at 14.

Jason Derulo claims this week’s best performing single, with his newest track It Girl skyrocketing from the 16th spot to three.
